Music: What Would You do with a Drunken Sailor? – Pete Seeger

Hi…We took another break, as you likely noticed, but now we’re back. Let’s just say I lost some teeth…;)

Fettucini with Walnut Ricotta Pesto

Music: The Shepherd’s Dog – Iron and Wine

First things first…yes, we’ve been negligent.  We haven’t posted our new schedule for the spring yet and spring is here. I promise, we’re working on it. And it’ll be totally worth it.

So, my friend Cia made this for me not too long ago and I really wanted to replicate it.  It was so easy and delicious and I love fresh ricotta on my pasta (and nothing else).  This is a Lydia Bastianich recipe from her show Lydia’s Italy.  I didn’t actually see this episode, nor did I have the recipe in front of me…I just sort of mimicked what Cia did (I think, maybe she’ll chime in and tell us otherwise). I always thought Pesto had to be the basil dish we all know and love.  But that’s not true. Pesto is any sauce pounded with a mortar and pestle.  I didn’t do that either so I guess this isn’t technically a pesto.  I guess you can say pesto is a raw sauce.  That’s fair.

Watercress Salad with Goat Cheese Bites, Roasted Peppers and Maple-Balsamic Vinaigrette

Music: Welcome Home – Radical Face

I used to work in the West Village and would constantly go to Il Tre Merli…particularly for this salad.  I’m not much into salad and really like how Europeans eat it after dinner so I can, most often, skip over it entirely.  This one is so refreshing and not at all salady (considering it contains fried goat cheese balls).  I made a really nice maple syrup balsamic vinaigrette to put on top.

Best Sandwich Eva with Polenta Fries

Music: Broadcast – I Found the F

I’ve talked about this sandwich before but I was craving it and couldn’t get to New Haven…so we made it at home. We paired it with polenta fries which were delicious and an easy alternative to french fries (although no more healthy).

Goat Cheese, Butternut Squash, Melted Onion and Duck Bacon Crostini

There’s got to be a better name for this…anyone? anyone?

In honor of Cathy Erway’s book The Art of Eating In, The Bell House is hosting a launch party complete with a crostini cook-off.  We really wanted to be a part of this but had a conflict.  BOOO! If you can make it you should…there will be lots of good food, music and beer.  A portion of the ticket sales will benefit Just Food & Oxfam relief efforts in Haiti.

Vegan (sorta) Feast for The Astral Crew

Music: Celia Cruz – Ritmo, Tambó y Flores

Some of my best memories of NY come from a wobegone time (5 years ago) when I would visit James and his old roommate Greg at their apartment in Greenpoint.  I was much younger then and Greenpoint was only just simmering with the young folk.  They lived in a beautiful building called The Astral. The Astral was built in 1875 as a residence for the Astral oil workers (Pratt Institute was built by the same architects).  (Speaking of oil, Greenpoint was affected by the largest domestic oil spill in the history of the United States – starting with a leakage from the refineries in the 1950’s,  it wasn’t discovered how massive the spill was until the 1970’s when the Coast Guard observed an oil streak up river into Queens)

Brown Sugar Bourbon Pork Tenderloin with Pomegranate Glaze, Creamed Baby Spinach and Potato Hash with Bacon and Melted Onions

Music: Thad Cockrell- Rosalyn

We got some great news a few weeks ago.  Our good friends are moving back to New York!  They have been living in Miami and we are so excited that they will be so close again.  Dan and Brooke are very special friends and they deserved a very special meal.
